An unscented (but fiercely bitter) member of the mint family, motherwort is beloved as an herb of longevity in Japanese culture. The botanical name, Leonurus cardiaca, means 'lion hearted', which speaks to it's ability to strengthen the cardiovascular system.
Herbalist and expert in herbal energetics, Rosalee de la Foret, describes motherwort as: "...a cooling and relaxing nervine that is commonly used for the physical and emotional heart. It has long been a beloved herb for women with stimulating properties that additionally support the uterus, the kidneys, and digestion."
Other benefits of motherwort:
- Reduces menstrual cramps
- Relieves anxiety and heart palpitations
- Lowers blood pressure and cholesterol
- Relieves hot flashes
Due to it's affinity for the uterus, and it's ability to increase vascularization, motherwort is not recommended for use by women with uterine fibroids or endometriosis, as it will greatly increase bleeding.
As always, keep in mind that not all herbs work the same (or at all) for all persons.
