Digestive issues such as gastric reflux and heartburn are common complaints in the US. This is not the case in many other countries. If you travel to France, for example, and enjoy a meal made with delicious cheeses, pastas, and rich cream based sauces, you will be offered a special drink before your meal (aperatif) and one after your meal (digestif). These drinks are made with strong bitter components designed to wake up the digestive system and stimulate the production of fluids, such as saliva and hydrochloric acid, necessary to properly digest the meal.
Herbalist Rosalee de la Foret has this to say about dandelion's effect on the gut:
"Besides being high in micronutrients and phytonutrients like iron, manganese, carotenes, calcium, and potassium, dandelions are also high in inulin. Inulin is a starchy carbohydrate that can help restore healthy gut flora in an interesting way. While we can’t break down this substance ourselves, eating it regularly provides food to the gut microbiome. Think of it like this: is a seed more likely to grow if you drop it on the cement? Or is it more likely to grow if you drop it into a rich soil and regularly add compost and water? The same goes for your gut flora. As a result of its beneficial effect on gut flora, inulin is often called a PREbiotic."
Dandelion is also powerfully nourishing medicine for the liver. According to herbalist Matthew Wood,
"Dandelion root is used for its alterative action to cool inflammation, thin fluids, and cleanse the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. Dandelion is both choleretic, increasing bile production in the liver, and cholagogue, causing the gallbladder to release bile into the small intestine and aid in the digestion of fats."
Our Dandelion Tincture is made from fresh spring and fall roots, leaves, stems and flowers of this beloved plant.
